DIY TV repair is not often something many people contemplate. It may be simpler than you think.

Repairing your own Plasma or LCD TV: Many people think “Oh my god! I couldn’t do that”, well think again; TV’s are made a lot simpler than they were 20 years ago. And now, rather than having one big main board, they have several.

Let’s break these down, for LCD TV’s we have 5 boards maximum:

Let’s talk about some common faults with LCD TV’s.

There are many offered for “spares or repairs” on various auction websites that can be picked up very cheaply. Today, many TV repair companies want big money just to take the back off. But, if you are handy with a screwdriver, then you can save yourself a fortune and also start making some money repairing them yourself.

The most common faults we come across are sound but no picture, this is 99% of the time down to the inverter board that has failed. This board powers the strip lamps in your screen to light it up, and can be found on the far left or right hand side of your screen. It is easily replaced with just a few screws and one or two plugs.

Stand-by faults are also very common. This is always down to the power supply in your TV. Before changing the power supply, always look for bulged and leaky capacitors near the heat sinks (they are tall circular shaped). Capacitors will nearly always be the fault when it comes to your TV having issues starting etc.

Sometimes you might have a rainbow of lines right across your screen or down just the left or right side. These type of faults are almost always down to your T.CON screen controller board. This board is found at the top of your TV in the middle under a steel plate (be cautious when removing this as it is connected to the screen via a ribbon cable). Part numbers always on the board.

Other faults like the inputs not working and the unit switching off by itself will be down to the Main AV board. This is the one housing the scart connectors and the  HDMI sockets.

Sometimes boards are just too badly damaged to be repaired, and this is when you will need the part number from the board to replace it. Rather than auction sites where the seller will not test the board and just take it from a broken TV thinking “it’s OK”.

Sharp Markets 90-inch TV

Sharp has begun the exclusive-to-the-U.S.-market deployment of what it is billing as the world’s largest LED TV: the 90-inch Aquos LC-90LE745U.

Dealers on a first-line rollout roster that includes Magnolia, hhgregg, P.C. Richard, Abt and Nebraska Furniture Mart started receiving the model last week, and it will be “by the end of the summer before we’re fully ramped up at retail,” Sharp’s vice president of strategic product marketing, Jim Sanduski , said.

The model will only be sold in-store, and will be the first, and so far only, Sharp TV SKU to be covered by a Unilateral Pricing Policy.  “This is a truly unique product in the marketplace, and we wanted to ensure retailer profitability,” Sanduski added in explaining the move. The model carries a $10,999.99 suggested retail price but is expected to sell at about $10,000, he said.

The 3D set, which comes with two pairs of glasses, boasts a screen area equivalent to eight 32-inch TVs or 56 iPad screens, and is twice the screen area of a 65-inch TV and three times the screen area of a 55-inch TV, Sanduski said.  It is 141 pounds, five inches deep, Wi-Fi-equipped, and features Sharp’s proprietary SmartCentral connectivity technology, which provides direct access to popular apps and video on demand as well as Web browsing and Skype capability. It also carries AquoMotion 240 image refresh technology to control image blurring during fast-action movie and sport viewing.  Purchasers will have access to Aquos Advantage Live, a free service that lets them connect directly over the Internet to customer support reps who can assist with settings management. Soon to be available will be the ability to control the set from iPhones and Android smartphones.

It consumes 381 watts of electricity, and each of the 500 LEDs used in its full-array configuration is guaranteed for 60,000 hours, or 27 years of six-hours-a-day operation, with uniform brightness. Its aluminum bezel, of the same design as is used in Sharp’s Elite-line TVs, is strong enough so that it could be limited in edge thickness to just over an inch, he said. The model’s panels are being made in both Sharp’s Sakai and Kamiyama, Japan factories, with all assembly done in Mexico.

Special training and merchandising strategies were developed to “make sure this set looks the best on the floor,” said Sanduski, including a merchandising topper reading “World’s Largest LCD TV.”   He added that the model cries out for “white glove delivery” by retailers handling it. “You don’t just drop this off on a consumer’s doorstep. It needs to be unboxed, set up and connected,” which opens up additional profit opportunities for dealers.

Normally, with no smoke the plasma current is undisturbed and a stable current is reached; but when smoke enters the plasma region the electrons collide with the smoke particles. It is a little like elephants walking on a motorway, suddenly everything goes much slower. The plasma current drops and the smoke alarm is sounded. So plasmas can saves lives even in our house.

A recent new technology uses the same idea of electrons colliding with dust particles. It is called a ionic purifier. When the electrons collide with the dust they stick to the surface, this causes the dust clusters to become negatively charged. The ions also collide with the dust but the ions are much heavier and therefore much slower, so more electrons hit the dust than ions. In a purifier a weak plasma is formed and any dust particles present are charged up negatively. An electric field with a positive and negative side is set up and the dust is attracted to the positive side. The dust is then collected and removed from the air. This is very important as some people are allergic to dust and mites that float in the air.

The weak plasma also has some more useful effects. When the electrons are heated in the electric field they collide with gas atoms and molecules and knock off electrons, this is called ionisation or ionization to our American cousins. But not all electron collisions successfully knock off the electron from the atom, some collisions just shake the atom or molecule and cause the electrons to enter an excited state. These atoms or molecules with excited electrons are called radicals. Radicals can collide with other gas atoms or molecules and form short lived chemicals called metastable states. These metastable molecules or atoms are highly reactive because the electrons are excited and they will react with cells or other living organism, killing them. They do not travel far as they are short lived so the effect is localised but careful design is required to prevent a build up of radicals that might be harmful. Normally, the metastable states quickly decay into harmless air molecules. The weak plasma can excite oxygen and turn it into a sterilizing agent which is short lived. This cleans the air in the purifier of dangerous microbes that could harm your health.

Plasma television are also formed in glass bulbs to produce light, usually in the form of UV and again a phospor is used to convert the UV light to visble light. These plasma bulbs are more efficient than incandesent bulbs. The main reason for this is that the incandesent bulb has a filament that is heated to several thousand degrees. When it is white hot we see the light. But we have to heat the filament so that creates a lot of heat energy and that is wasteful. With a plasma light we only heat the electrons and not the gas. As the electrons only make up a tiny mass compared to the mass of the filament then plasma lights are cheaper to run than filament. It is interesting that the father of plasma physics,Irving Langmuir, was also a developer of the incadesent bulb. So we see plasma are useful about the house even if plasma physicist like myself are not, and we have not got around to talk about all the things that are found in the house that are made by plasma. I think we will leave that for another day.

2009 HDTV Buying Guide: Part 1 – Price

It almost sounds too easy but the first and most important aspect of your HDTV purchase should be price.  Your television is supposed to give you pleasure and entertainment, not make you wish you never set eyes on it.  To make sure you never get to that point, the best way is to make sure you know in advance how much television you want to buy.

Price comes into play in a few different ways.  It can impact the brand of your television, the size, and how you buy it.

Buying a television isn’t that different from when you went to school, there are popular brands and brands that aren’t that well known.  The top brands like Sony, Panasonic, and Samsung typically charge a premium because they spend a lot more time marketing their products and usually give you a warranty that’s more comprehensive.  If price isn’t an issue, you can pick any television.  The issue arises when price is a concern which is true for most people in the market today.  Then you’re left deciding how to compromise. 

Companies like Vizio, Olevia, and Soyo have been able to grow marketshare and take it away from the “big 3″ of Consumer Electronics.  Instead of flaunting a brand name they speak more about value.  They are able to drive sales because people have been taught that most of the HDTV screens are all made the same handful of manufacturers and the picture is almost guaranteed to be better than an older CRT television.  Couple this with the thinner form factor and almost any company can get away with making an HDTV providing the price is good enough.

Other companies like Best Buy have created Dynex and Insignia as their own brands.  Instead of paying for marketing they show their product in their circulars and on their store shelves and are able to charge less because they don’t have to fight.  Instead these private label brands flourish because they are labeled as “exclusives.”  Typically, in exchange for a lesser known name and a low price tag you get shorter warranty.  Many manufacturers offer a one year warranty but many of the lesser known brands will only get you 90 days. How to Fix LCD TV

You can have a number of problems with your LCD TV. All these problems can be fixed with a little guidance. If you know how to fix LCD TV and the mechanism of a TV, then identifying the exact problem will be very easy and you will be able to fix the problem better and faster. You don’t have to replace the TV set if something goes wrong with it, fixing it on your own would be cheaper than that.

The first step on how to repair LCD TV is reboot it i.e. turn off the main switch and check whether the plug is properly connected with the switch and there are no loose connections. Now, switch on your TV and see whether it functions properly.

If the problem is not fixed by this then go in the menu option of your television. Check if any of the settings have been changed by you accidentally. If you find that these changes in the settings are the cause of your problem then change these settings. If this doesn’t fix your problem or there are some other problems then try the following techniques.

Fixing screen problems of LCD TV

• If your screen is pink or flashes or the audio system is not working properly then the problem is related with the DDC communication. To fix this problem, power up your system when all the HDMI cables are connected. If this doesn’t work then try using different inputs. If this also fails to fix your problem then install a DDC line condition. This will definitely solve your problem.
• If the picture comes and goes frequently, then either the TMDS channels are getting high bit rate error or not working efficiently or there is a problem with your DDC line. To fix this problem replace your cable with a better quality cable having larger diameter.
• If you see sparkles in the picture then there is a problem in the video data transmission. This may be due to the length or the quality of the cable. The length of your cable should not exceed 10 meters or else it may cause problems. Sometimes bad connectors are also responsible for such kind of problems. Identify the exact problem and either replace the cable or the connectors.

Plasma TV repair. Learn from my mistakes.

www.tvrepairinfo.com Here are the numbers I found on my replacement power supply board. LJ4104217A I spent a lot of time and money on this plasma TV only to learn what not to do in the future. I heard people say it’s best to change both buffer boards with the Y-sustain board but I thought I knew better. Apparently not in the case of this Samsung TV. Oh well at least I learned something I could share with others.
