If a television set have raster, no picture and no sound chances are high the tuner, IF section or the AGC circuit have problem. Since TV tuner is the easiest to see i started off with the tuner first. As usual in any electronic repair, i would use the handle of my screw driver to knock on the suspected section which is the tuner. Surprisingly i got back the picture and sound the moment i hit the tuner casing. Turning back to see the circuit board, i found a slight dry joint in one of the tuner pins. After resoldering it i thought it would be fine and after hitting the tuner again the same problem arise again. I concluded that it was the tuner internal section that might have dry joints.

I soldered the tuner out again removed both metal covers and began to see with the help of magnifying glass. Ha! got it, found two pins that had very obvious dry joints. After applying fresh solder on all of the internal joints, the bright, nice picture and sound came back again. I just love electronic repair!

I decided to void my warranty and take a look inside. My TV is a Toshiba Regza model number 32XV555D, but I imagine the same switch is used on many Toshiba models and the following instructions may be of use to you too.

I’m not a professional TV engineer and I take no responsibility for any damage you do to yourself or your TV if you are foolhardy enough to follow my description!

The first step to repairing the switch is to remove the back of the TV. Unplug the TV from the wall, and remove any HDMI/SCART/Aerial cables. Put the TV screen side down on a soft non-scratch surface.

The back of the TV is held on by 17 screws – you will need a phillips head screwdriver to remove them. The screws are not all the same size, so ensure you remember which screw goes in which hole. The screws to remove are all marked with an arrow, the 17th one took me a while to find – it is located above 2nd SCART connector.

Once the screws are removed, carefully lift off the back panel – it should come off easily. If not, make sure you have removed all the screws.

The power switch is at the right side of the TV , you will see that the button you push has a cylinder on the back which needs to somehow activate the switch which does not line up with it.

The button should push a square plastic plate which should be attached to the switch. In my case, the plate had broken and fallen off the switch. This meant that the button did nothing. You can see in the photograph that the plate has fallen off and is lying underneath the button. You have a couple of options at this point; you can either activate the switch manually, put the TV back together again and just use the wall switch to power your TV off an on, or you can repair the switch.

From a search of the Internet, it seems that this is a common problem with Toshiba TVs – if your TV is still in warranty, it is probably best to get an official spare fitted, but I decided to make a stronger repair so it does not happen again.

The plastic piece with broken section

The plastic clip which holds the plate in place seems to be very fragile, and I could not find the small piece of plastic which had broken off. I mixed up some 5-minute epoxy and waited a couple of minutes for it to thicken up a bit. I put a small blob of epoxy onto the clip and put it in place on the switch. You will find this easier if you manually press the switch to put it in the ‘on’ position as this gives a little more space for maneuvering. The plate should be able to stay in position by itself while the epoxy cures (why not go and write a how to fix your TV blog post while you’re waiting!)

Once the epoxy has cured (mine says it is ready to handle in 15 minutes and achieves full strength in 1 hour) you can put the back on the TV by replacing all the screws. Power on your TV and, with a bit of luck, the power switch will work again. You have probably missed the programme you were wanting to watch though!

Repairing Plasma TV Panasonic TH42PV500M

Plasma TVs are very expensive especially the one that is made from Japan. You need to pay more attention if  the screen size is very big . I received this Plasma Tv with LED blinking, no picture and no sound. Self-Check is used to automatically check the bus lines and hexadecimal code of the Television set , but there’s no access, the screen is always black.
According to the manufacturer information, no picture and no OSD  with SC board LED ok and SS board LED ok means that the D board is faulty. In my case the SC & SS boards LEDs are ok, but the D board is not faulty because when checking the output voltage, I noticed that the 14v was absent. In normal condition when A board receives +5v , the output +15v and the A board  will energize the signal SW to process circuit.
My intuition tells me to isolate H, TA and TB board block. When it’s done I powered on the set and the screen works, but the set does not recognize the aerial, Av1 and etc and only input vga works as monitor for pc.
Now I can access the self check as follows :

I tried isolate contact by contact between PA board and H board and check the result of self check. Finally I  have isolated the +14v and the set recognized the HDMI. The set works fine now with external HDMI DTTV/home cinema and satellite.

Panasonic Plasma defective power supply board

I purchased a Panasonic Plasma HBTV HT-46PZ80U approx.2 years ago.

The TV was working fine until August 4, 2011, at that time the TV would not power up, just a series of 10 red blinking lights that repeat indefinitely. I did quite a bit of trouble shooting and research on Panasonic Plasma HDTVs and more specifically my model #HT-46PZ80U. There is a wide spread problem with the power supply board that connects the HDMI inputs. I called Panasonic and was forwarded to their "Concierge Club".

After 3 attempts and 30+ minutes on hold, I was helped by a Panasonic technician. He had me unplug TV, wait 3 minutes, and then plug it back in and try to power it on. No change. He gave me a case# and referred me to a local TV repair shop.When I called them, I was told their would be a $100.00 diagnostic fee.

I was willing to pay this charge, but when I asked if Panasonic would replace the defective power supply board, they said that they did not think so. The boards cost any where from $140. to $350 depending on which board it is. I do not have a figure for the labor.

The web is full of people with the same problem as mine, the TV stops working anywhere from 15 months on out. This is not restricted to just my model.I also have a Samsung 51" LCD HDTV that is a year old than my Panasonic. About 6 months ago it shut down for no apparent reason". I contacted Samsung about the problem, THEY sent a local repairman out to my house/.

He fixed the problem(bad capacitors) in under 30 minutes'. No charge!. He told me that Samsung would've replaced the defective regardless of the age, because the parts were defective,. That's the way a company gets a repeat customer:.Has anyone had any success in getting Panasonic to pay to replace defective part?

These TVs tout that they will work for something like 30,000 to 60,000 hours!.
