LG and Samsung TV’s Get the Most Energy-Efficient TV Award

What are the specifications that are mostly thought of when we plan to a new Television? Is it the resolution? Or maybe it’s all about raw size? We understand that televisions are essentially entertainment machines. But it seems that there is a good portion of consumers who don’t really pay good attention to their target TV unit’s energy consumption.

But for a considerable majority of us who are concerned about energy efficiency, SEAD has provided their best vote for the most efficient TV’s available today to help us in our decision. For the first time, they have given awards to flat panel TV units that stood all above others in the energy usage category. The winners? LG television and Samsung tv. Both tech companies have taken the top places for having produced and commercialized some of the most energy efficient TV’s for the year 2012.

The SEAD Global Efficiency Medal award is divided into three categories: the small (below 29-inches), medium (29 to 42-inches), and large category (above 42-inches). Aside from screen size categories, there is also the “emerging technology” category, which is of course given to any appropriate model that is yet to be commercially released in the tech market.

Here are the winners of the SEAD Global Efficiency Medal in each category:

For the small category, the winner was Samsung’s UN26EH4000F. It is a Series 4000 26-inch LED-backlit LCD TV that has a native resolution of 1366×768. While actively used, it consumes about 23 watts of power.

For the medium category, there are two winning Samsung TV models, the UE40EH5000W and the UN40EH5000F. Both models are slim LED-backlit LCD TV models that have a resolution of 1920×1080 and an energy consumption rate of 35 watts. Aside from the lower power rate, it owes its efficiency to the numerous power management options that it has such as eco sensors, auto shutdown, and standard timers.

For the large category, the winner is LG’s 47LM670S. It is a 47-inch LED-backlit LCD TV model that has an energy consumption rate of 43 watts. Its energy efficiency rate is simply attributed directly to the level of performance that it can do at such energy use rate compared to other models in the same category.

Finally, for the emerging technology category, a prototype model by LG was chosen as the winner. It is a 47-inch LED-backlit LCD unit that is generally considered to be 59% more efficient that current models. The model is said to be commercially available within two years.

The SEAD (Super-Efficient Equipment and Appliance Deployment) Initiative was originally created in 2010 by the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM), which is a global forum that consists of various energy institutions from leading governments around the world. The initiative is planning to hold the main ceremony for the Global Efficiency Awards in early 2013, at New Delhi, India.
