Sharp resurrects Elite brand for LED Televisions

Sharp and Pioneer are bringing back an iconic name in television by introducing Elite LED LCD television. Sharp has owned a 14% stake in Pioneer since 2007.

The new line of HDTVs is the first under the Elite brand name since Pioneer stepped making Elite Plasmas in 2009. The sets were developed by a team of engineers from both companies in order to deliver what Sharp says will be the new benchmark for black-level performance and picture clarity since the demise of the Elite Kuro plasma line.

The new 1,920 x 1080p Elite TVs will be available in 60 and 70 inch sizes (models PRO-60X5FD and PRO-70X5FD) in late August for an eye-popping $6,000 and $9,000 respectively.

Sharp tv PRO-60X5FD and PRO-70X5FD will sell for $6,000 and $9,000 respectively.

Features of the new sets include: a black brushed aluminium designs, internet connectivity, 3D functionality including two sets of active shutter 3-D glasses, ISF (Imaging Science Foundation) and THX display certification, five HDMI inputs and a full array LED with local dimming which allows specific groups of LED television to be dimmed for greater control of brightness and darkness in different areas of the screen contributing to improved black levels.

The PRO-60X5FD weighs 72 pounds and uses 204 watts of power while in use. The PRO-70X5FD weighs 95 pounds and uses 282 watts of power in use. In standby mode, both sets use about one tenth of a watt.

The new HDTVs, which are manufactured in Mexico, will be sold through Elite dealers only in North America.
